Introduction

EN 10025-3 is a European standard specifying normalized or normalized rolled low-alloy structural steels with improved toughness, commonly referred to as fine-grain structural steels. These steels provide enhanced yield strength, notch toughness, and uniform mechanical properties, making them suitable for welded constructions, heavy engineering, and structural applications in moderate to low-temperature environments.

EN 10025-3 steels are widely used in construction, bridges, offshore structures, shipbuilding, railways, and heavy engineering, where toughness and reliability are essential. They are commonly supplied as plates, sheets, and coils and are often used in applications requiring improved toughness at sub-zero temperatures.

Applicable Standards and Specifications

Standard: EN 10025-3
Material Type: Non-alloy, fine-grain structural steel
Product Forms: Plates, sheets, coils, strips
Manufacturing Process: Hot Rolled (HR)
Delivery Condition: Normalized (+N) or Normalized Rolled (+NR)

EN 10025-3 steels comply with European construction codes and are suitable for structural projects requiring both strength and toughness.

Available Grades of EN 10025-3 Structural Steel

EN 10025-3 defines multiple grades based on yield strength, tensile strength, and impact toughness:

S275N, S275NL
S355N, S355NL
S420N, S420NL
S460N, S460NL

Grades with the “N” suffix are normalized, while “NL” indicates normalized rolled with enhanced notch toughness. These grades are selected based on design requirements, environmental temperature, and structural load conditions.

Impact test requirements:
NL grades: tested at −20°C or −50°C depending on thickness to ensure notch toughness. N grades: typically tested at 0°C.

Physical Properties (Typical)

Density: approximately 7.85 g/cm³
Melting Point: approximately 1425 – 1540°C
Thermal Conductivity: approximately 50 – 60 W/m·K
Modulus of Elasticity: approximately 200 GPa

Thickness, Width, and Size Range

Thickness: 3 mm to 150 mm
Width: up to 3000 mm
Length: 2000 mm to 12000 mm or as per customer requirement

Plates can be supplied in cut-to-size, sheared, or flame-cut conditions.

Key Features and Advantages

Improved notch toughness and ductility
High yield strength with uniform mechanical properties
Excellent weldability and formability
Wide range of grades for low-temperature and structural applications
Compliance with European construction and structural codes

Weldability and Fabrication

EN 10025-3 steels exhibit excellent weldability using SMAW, GMAW, FCAW, and SAW processes. Preheating is generally not required for thinner plates, but thicker sections or NL grades may require controlled preheat and post-weld heat treatment to avoid hydrogen-induced cracking.

Machinability

Machinability is moderate; care should be taken with higher-strength grades (S420, S460) to optimize cutting speeds, tooling, and cooling during fabrication.

Corrosion Resistance

EN 10025-3 steels have limited corrosion resistance. Protective coatings such as painting, galvanizing, or epoxy coating are recommended for outdoor or humid environments.

Typical Applications of EN 10025-3 Structural Steel

Construction and Infrastructure
High-rise buildings and industrial frameworks
Bridges, pedestrian walkways, and flyovers
Roof trusses and flooring systems

Industrial and Fabrication
Heavy machinery frames
Equipment supports and mounting structures
Cranes and material handling equipment

Marine and Offshore Structures
Shipbuilding structural components (non-critical)
Port jetties, offshore platforms, and access structures

Transportation and Heavy Engineering
Railway wagons and bridges
Truck and trailer chassis
Conveyors and structural components

Energy Sector
Wind turbine towers
Power plant frameworks
Oil and gas secondary structural supports

Conclusion

EN 10025-3 Structural Steel Plate / Sheet is a high-performance fine-grain structural steel with enhanced toughness, strength, and weldability. Its availability in multiple grades and low-temperature toughness makes it suitable for a wide range of applications including construction, bridges, heavy engineering, shipbuilding, and offshore structures. Proper fabrication, welding, and surface protection ensure long service life and reliable performance across demanding environments.
