Introduction

EN 10025-6 is a European standard covering high-strength structural steels supplied in the quenched and tempered condition. These steels are engineered for extremely demanding structural applications where very high yield strength, excellent toughness, and resistance to fatigue and impact loading are essential.

The grades covered under EN 10025-6 allow significant weight reduction without compromising structural integrity, making them ideal for heavy engineering, offshore, mining, lifting equipment, and high-load infrastructure projects. Depending on thickness and grade, EN 10025-6 steels are supplied in sheet, plate, coil, and strip forms.

Applicable Standards and Specifications

Standard: EN 10025-6
Material Type: High-strength quenched and tempered structural steel
Product Forms: Sheet, plate, coil, strip
Manufacturing Process: Hot Rolled
Delivery Condition: +QT (Quenched and Tempered)

EN 10025-6 steels are fully compliant with European structural and engineering design requirements for high-strength applications.

Available Grades of EN 10025-6 Structural Steel

The following grades are covered under this specification:

S690QL
S690QL1
S690QL2

Key Features of EN 10025-6 Steel Sheet / Plate / Coil / Strip

Ultra High Yield Strength
Exceptional yield strength enables major weight reduction in structures while maintaining high safety margins.

Quenched and Tempered Microstructure
Controlled heat treatment provides an optimal balance of strength, hardness, and toughness.

Excellent Low-Temperature Impact Toughness
QL, QL1, and QL2 grades ensure reliable performance in extremely cold and offshore environments.

High Fatigue and Impact Resistance
Ideal for dynamic, cyclic, and shock-loaded applications such as cranes and heavy lifting equipment.

Optimized Weldability for High-Strength Steel
Low carbon equivalent allows welding with controlled procedures and suitable consumables.

Dimensional Stability During Fabrication
Reduced residual stresses minimize distortion during cutting and welding operations.

Wide Strength Range for Design Optimization
Grades from S690 to S960 allow engineers to select the most efficient strength level for each application.

Weldability and Fabrication

EN 10025-6 steels can be welded using SMAW, GMAW, FCAW, and SAW processes. Preheating and controlled heat input are strongly recommended, particularly for thicker sections and higher-strength grades. Post-weld heat treatment may be required depending on service conditions.

Machinability

Machinability is moderate to difficult due to very high strength. Carbide tools, reduced cutting speeds, and effective cooling are essential for efficient machining.

Corrosion Resistance

These steels offer limited inherent corrosion resistance and should be protected using painting, galvanizing, or advanced coating systems in outdoor or marine environments.

Typical Applications of EN 10025-6 Steel Sheet / Plate / Coil / Strip
