Introduction

ASTM A240 / A240M covers chromium and chromium-nickel stainless steel plates, sheets, and strips intended for pressure vessels, general applications, and high-temperature service. These materials are widely used due to their excellent corrosion resistance, strength, and formability.

Chromium-nickel stainless steels, commonly known as austenitic stainless steels, offer superior resistance to oxidation and corrosion, along with good weldability and toughness across a wide temperature range.

Ladhani Metal Corporation is a manufacturer, supplier, and exporter of ASTM A240 / A240M stainless steel plates, sheets, and strips, supplying high-quality materials for industrial, structural, and pressure vessel applications.

Applicable Standard

  • Standard Specification: ASTM A240 / A240M
  • Organization: ASTM International
  • Title: Standard Specification for Chromium and Chromium-Nickel Stainless Steel Plate, Sheet, and Strip for Pressure Vessels and for General Applications

This specification covers flat-rolled stainless steel products intended for use in corrosive and high-temperature environments.

Key Features of ASTM A240 Stainless Steel

  • Excellent corrosion resistance
  • High strength and durability
  • Good weldability and formability
  • Suitable for high and low temperature applications
  • Non-magnetic in annealed condition (austenitic grades)
  • Good oxidation resistance
  • Hygienic and easy to clean

Heat Resistance and Corrosion Resistance

ASTM A240 chromium-nickel stainless steels offer excellent performance in various environments:

  • Austenitic grades provide outstanding corrosion resistance in chemical and marine environments
  • Molybdenum-containing grades (316, 317) offer improved resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion
  • Stabilized grades (321, 347) resist intergranular corrosion at high temperatures

These steels perform well in both oxidizing and mildly reducing environments.

Applications of ASTM A240 Stainless Steel Plate, Sheet & Strip

ASTM A240 stainless steels are widely used across multiple industries:

Chemical and Petrochemical Industry

  • Process equipment
  • Storage tanks
  • Heat exchangers

Food and Beverage Industry

  • Processing equipment
  • Kitchen equipment
  • Storage vessels

Oil and Gas Industry

  • Pipelines
  • Offshore structures

Power Generation

  • Boilers
  • Pressure vessels

Construction and Architecture

  • Structural components
  • Cladding and decorative applications

Pharmaceutical Industry

  • Hygienic equipment
  • Clean room applications

Heat Treatment

  • Austenitic stainless steels are typically solution annealed
  • Heat treatment improves corrosion resistance and restores ductility
  • Rapid cooling prevents carbide precipitation

Conclusion

ASTM A240 / A240M chromium-nickel stainless steel plates, sheets, and strips offer excellent corrosion resistance, strength, and versatility for a wide range of industrial applications. With multiple grades available, these materials are suitable for pressure vessels, chemical processing, and structural uses.
