Introduction
EN 10083-3 is a European standard covering alloy
steels supplied in the quenched and tempered condition for mechanical and
engineering applications. These steels are designed to achieve high strength,
excellent toughness, improved fatigue resistance, and superior hardenability
compared to non-alloy carbon steels. EN 10083-3 alloy steel bars and plates are
widely used in automotive, heavy engineering, oil & gas, and general
mechanical industries where components are subjected to dynamic loads and high stress.
The alloying elements such as chromium,
molybdenum, nickel, manganese, and boron enhance hardenability, wear
resistance, and impact strength, making these steels suitable for critical
structural and machine parts.
Applicable
Standard and Scope
EN 10083-3 specifies the technical delivery
conditions for alloy steels intended for quenching and tempering. The standard
defines:
Chemical composition limits
Mechanical property requirements
Heat treatment conditions
Testing procedures
Inspection and certification requirements
Materials are typically supplied with
inspection certificates according to EN 10204 (3.1 or 3.2 upon request). The
standard applies to hot-rolled bars, plates, and semi-finished products
intended for further machining or fabrication.
EN 10083-3 steels are particularly suitable
for components requiring high core strength, surface hardening capability, and
reliable performance under fatigue loading.
Grades
Covered Under EN 10083-3
The following grades are covered under EN
10083:
20MnB5, 30MnB5, 38MnB5, 35NiCr6, 39NiCrMo3,
30CrNiMo8, 34CrNiMo6, 30NiCrMo16-6, 36NiCrMo16, 38Cr2, 46Cr2, 34Cr4, 37Cr4,
41Cr4, 34CrS4, 37CrS4, 41CrS4, 27MnCrB5-2, 33MnCrB5-2, 39MnCrB6-2, 25CrMoS4,
25CrMo4, 34CrMo4, 42CrMo4, 34CrMoS4, 42CrMoS4, 50CrMo4.
These grades differ in alloying content and
hardenability characteristics, allowing selection based on required strength,
toughness, wear resistance, and machinability.
Chemical
Composition
EN 10083-3 alloy steels contain controlled
percentages of:
Carbon (C) for strength and hardness
Manganese (Mn) for hardenability
Chromium (Cr) for wear resistance and corrosion resistance
Molybdenum (Mo) for high-temperature strength and toughness
Nickel (Ni) for improved impact resistance
Boron (B) in certain grades to enhance hardenability
Sulfur (S) in “S” grades for improved machinability
The exact composition varies by grade. For
example:
42CrMo4 typically contains approximately
0.38–0.45% C, 0.90–1.20% Cr, and 0.15–0.30% Mo.
34CrNiMo6 contains approximately 0.30–0.38% C with chromium, nickel, and
molybdenum for superior hardenability and toughness.
20MnB5 includes boron additions for enhanced hardening capability.
Mechanical
Properties
Mechanical properties depend on grade, section
size, and heat treatment condition, but typical values include:
Yield strength: approximately 600–1000 MPa
Tensile strength: approximately 800–1200 MPa
Elongation: generally 10–18%
Impact toughness: good resistance at room or specified sub-zero temperatures
Nickel-alloyed grades such as 34CrNiMo6 and
36NiCrMo16 provide excellent low-temperature toughness, while
chromium-molybdenum grades such as 42CrMo4 offer high strength with good
fatigue resistance.
Heat Treatment
EN 10083-3 steels are supplied in the quenched
and tempered condition.
The typical process involves:
Austenitizing at controlled temperature
Rapid quenching in oil or water
Tempering at specified temperature to achieve desired strength and toughness
Some grades are also suitable for surface
hardening processes such as induction hardening, flame hardening, or nitriding.
Form of
Supply
EN 10083-3 alloy steels are supplied in
multiple product forms, including:
Round bars
Flat bars
Square bars
Hexagonal bars
Forged bars
