Notes
- “—” indicates no specified
requirement.
- Heat analysis for manganese
shall be determined and reported as described in ASTM A6 / A6M.
- Manganese content of
0.85–1.35 % and silicon content of 0.15–0.40 % are required for plates
over 3/4 in. [20 mm] thickness.
- For each
reduction of 0.01 % below the specified carbon maximum, an increase of
0.06 % manganese above the specified maximum is permitted up to a maximum
of 1.35 %.

Additional Details
•
Tensile requirements are specified according to ASTM A36 / A36M standard.
•
Yield strength represents the minimum stress required to produce permanent
deformation in the material.
•
Tensile strength indicates the maximum stress the material can withstand before
fracture.
•
Elongation values define the ductility of the material and its ability to
stretch before breaking.
Notes
- Refer
to ASTM A6 / A6M for specimen orientation and testing procedures.
- For
wide flange shapes over 426 lb/ft [634 kg/m], the maximum tensile strength
limit does not apply and minimum elongation in 2 in. [50 mm] is reduced to
19.5 %.
- Yield
point of 32 ksi [220 MPa] is permitted for plates over 8 in. [200 mm] in
thickness.
- Elongation
is not required for floor plates.
- For plates wider than 24 in. [600
mm], elongation requirements are reduced by two percentage points.
