Introduction

EN 10155 specifies structural steels with improved atmospheric corrosion resistance, commonly known as weathering steels. These steels are alloyed with elements such as copper, chromium and nickel to provide enhanced resistance to atmospheric corrosion compared with conventional structural steels. The historical EN 10155:1993 grades were subsequently incorporated into the EN 10025-5 series.

Ladhani Metal Corporation supplies EN 10155 weathering steel sheet, plate and strip in different grades, sizes and delivery conditions for structural and engineering requirements.

Applicable Standard

EN 10155:1993 – Structural Steels with Improved Atmospheric Corrosion Resistance – Technical Delivery Conditions.

EN 10155 is a historical specification; its weathering-steel grades were carried forward into EN 10025-5. For current procurement, the applicable EN 10025-5 grade should be confirmed.

Material Type

EN 10155 covers structural carbon steels with improved atmospheric corrosion resistance. The addition of copper and chromium, together with controlled alloying, promotes the formation of a protective surface layer during atmospheric exposure.

Notes

The steel shall contain at least one of the following elements: Al total ≥ 0.020%, Nb: 0.015–0.060%, V: 0.02–0.12%, Ti: 0.02–0.10%. If three elements are used in combination, at least one of them shall be present with the minimum content indicated.

It is permissible to exceed the specified values provided that each increase of 0.001% N reduces the P maximum content by 0.005%; the N content of the ladle analysis, however, shall not be more than 0.012%.

The steels may show a Ni content of max. 0.65%.

The steels may contain max. 0.30% Mo and max. 0.15% Zr.

The maximum value for nitrogen does not apply if the chemical composition shows a minimum total Al content of 0.020% or if sufficient other N-binding elements are present. The N-binding elements shall be mentioned in the inspection document.

Additional alloying elements such as nitrogen-binding elements may be specified depending on grade. Some S355 grades may also permit additions of molybdenum or zirconium under the historical specification.

Fabrication and Welding

EN 10155 weathering steels can be processed using conventional structural-steel fabrication techniques. Welding procedures should take into account the specific grade, thickness, carbon equivalent and required mechanical properties.

Cutting, drilling, forming and machining can be performed using suitable procedures and equipment.

Heat Treatment

Weathering structural steels are generally supplied in the delivery condition specified by the standard or purchase order. Heat treatment after delivery should be performed only when appropriate for the particular grade and application because uncontrolled heating can affect mechanical properties and corrosion-resistant characteristics.

Advantages

  • Enhanced resistance to atmospheric corrosion
  • High structural strength
  • Good toughness
  • Suitable for exposed outdoor structures
  • Attractive natural weathered appearance
  • Reduced maintenance requirements in suitable environments
  • Available in sheet, plate and strip forms
  • Suitable for structural fabrication

EN 10155 Equivalent / Successor Grades

The EN 10155:1993 weathering-steel grades were incorporated into the later EN 10025-5 standard. For example, S355J2G2W from EN 10155 corresponds to S355J2W in EN 10025-5, while S355K2G2W corresponds to S355K2W.

Conclusion

EN 10155 structural steels with improved atmospheric corrosion resistance are weathering steels developed for structural applications where enhanced resistance to atmospheric corrosion is required. S235J0W, S235J2W, S355J0WP, S355J2WP, S355J0W, S355J2G1W, S355J2G2W, S355K2G1W and S355K2G2W represent the principal historical EN 10155 grades. For new projects and procurement, the corresponding EN 10025-5 designation should be confirmed because EN 10155 has been superseded by the later European standard.
