DIN 2527 Blind Flanges: Customization, Pressure Ratings, and Material Options

Introduction:

Ladhani Metal Corporation is a leading manufacturer and supplier of high-quality flanges and other metal products, catering to various industries worldwide. One of the  products they provide is the DIN 2527 Blind Flange. These flanges play a crucial role in piping and sealing systems, ensuring the safety, efficiency, and reliability of industrial operations. At Ladhani Metal Corporation, we pride ourselves on offering an extensive range of blind flanges made from different materials, including Titanium, Stainless Steel (SS), Inconel, Monel, Duplex, Super Duplex, Mild Steel (MS), and Carbon Steel (CS), to meet the diverse needs of our clients.

This article will explore the features, types and different PN ratings in detail of DIN 2527 Blind Flanges, including the different pressure ratings (PN), and highlight the various materials available at Ladhani Metal Corporation, along with their respective chemical compositions.

What is a DIN 2527 Blind Flange?

A DIN 2527 Blind Flange is a type of flange used to seal the ends of piping systems. The "blind" nature of the flange means that it is solid and does not have any openings. The purpose of the blind flange is to seal a pipe or vessel, preventing the flow of materials and ensuring system integrity. This type of flange is widely used in situations where a pipeline needs to be closed off for maintenance, testing, or when the pipeline is not yet in operation.

DIN 2527 is a German standard that specifies the design, dimensions, and material requirements for blind flanges. These flanges are known for their high quality, precision, and durability, making them a popular choice in various industries, including chemical processing, oil and gas, power generation, and more.

Materials Used in DIN 2527 Blind Flanges and Their Compositions

At Ladhani Metal Corporation, we offer DIN 2527 Blind Flanges in a variety of materials, each chosen for its specific properties and applications. Here's an overview of the materials we provide, along with their chemical compositions:

1. Titanium Blind Flanges

Titanium is known for its exceptional resistance to corrosion, especially in harsh environments, and its high strength-to-weight ratio. It is used in industries like aerospace, marine, and chemical processing, where high strength and corrosion resistance are critical.

Titanium (Grade 2) composition typically includes about 99.2% titanium, with small amounts of iron (0.30%), oxygen (0.25%), nitrogen (0.03%), hydrogen (0.015%), and carbon (0.08%). This makes Titanium Grade 2 a versatile, corrosion-resistant material ideal for various industrial applications.
Titanium Grade 5 is composed of approximately 90% Titanium (Ti), 6% Aluminum (Al), and 4% Vanadium (V),Iron (Fe): 0.30% (max), Oxygen (O): 0.13% – 0.20%, Carbon (C): 0.08% (max), Nitrogen (N): 0.05% (max),Hydrogen (H): 0.015% (max)

2. Stainless Steel (SS) Blind Flanges

Stainless Steel is a versatile material with excellent resistance to rust and corrosion. SS304, SS316, and SS321 are common grades used for manufacturing blind flanges, each suited for specific applications.

SS304 (18-20% Chromium, 8-10.5% Nickel, 2% Manganese, 0.75% Silicon, 0.08% Carbon) offers a good balance of corrosion resistance and strength. SS316 (16-18% Chromium, 10-14% Nickel, 2-3% Molybdenum) has superior corrosion resistance, particularly in chloride environments.

3. Inconel Blind Flanges

Inconel is an alloy made primarily of nickel and chromium, designed to withstand extreme temperatures and high-stress environments. Inconel 625, for example, has a composition of about 58-63% nickel, 20-23% chromium, 8-10% molybdenum, and 3.15-4.15% niobium. This composition provides outstanding oxidation resistance at high temperatures.

4. Monel Blind Flanges

Monel is an alloy primarily composed of nickel, known for its excellent resistance to corrosion, particularly in seawater and other aggressive environments. Monel 400 has 63-70% nickel, 28-34% copper, and small amounts of iron (2.5%), manganese (2%), carbon (0.30%), and silicon (0.50%). Its resistance to corrosion makes it ideal for marine and chemical processing applications.

5. Duplex Stainless Steel Blind Flanges

Duplex stainless steel is a combination of austenitic and ferritic stainless steels, providing enhanced strength and resistance to corrosion. Duplex Stainless Steel 2205 contains 22-23% chromium, 4.5-6.5% nickel, and 3% molybdenum. The nitrogen content (0.08-0.2%) enhances its resistance to pitting corrosion and stress corrosion cracking, making it suitable for aggressive environments.

6. Super Duplex Stainless Steel Blind Flanges

Super Duplex Stainless Steel offers a combination of high strength, corrosion resistance, and resistance to stress corrosion cracking. Super Duplex Stainless Steel 2507 includes 24-26% chromium, 6-8% nickel, 3-5% molybdenum, and 0.24-0.32% nitrogen. This composition provides exceptional resistance to both pitting and crevice corrosion in harsh environments like offshore oil rigs.

7. Mild Steel (MS) Blind Flanges

Mild Steel is an affordable material commonly used in less demanding applications where the need for corrosion resistance is not as critical. Mild Steel (IS 2062) contains a maximum of 0.25% carbon, with 0.60-0.90% manganese and small amounts of phosphorus (0.04%) and sulfur (0.05%). This basic composition makes Mild Steel ideal for general-purpose applications in construction and industrial systems that do not face aggressive conditions.

8. Carbon Steel (CS) Blind Flanges

Carbon Steel is one of the most commonly used materials for industrial flanges due to its strength, durability, and cost-effectiveness. Carbon Steel (ASTM A105) typically has 0.35% maximum carbon content, with 0.60-0.90% manganese and traces of phosphorus and sulfur (0.035% each). Carbon Steel flanges are suitable for high-pressure applications in systems that do not involve highly corrosive environments.

Pressure Rating (PN) of DIN 2527 Blind Flanges

The PN (pressure nominal) is a standard that indicates the pressure class of the flange, essentially determining the maximum pressure it can handle under normal operating conditions. The DIN 2527 blind flanges are typically available in the following PN ratings:

  • PN 6 – Suitable for low-pressure applications up to 6 bar.

  • PN 10 – Suitable for applications with a pressure rating up to 10 bar.

  • PN 16 – Suitable for higher pressure applications up to 16 bar.

  • PN 25 – Suitable for medium-high pressure applications, rated up to 25 bar.

  • PN 40 – Designed for high-pressure applications, up to 40 bar.

The appropriate PN rating depends on the specific requirements of your piping system, taking into account factors such as the operating pressure, the type of material, and the environment in which the flange will be used.
