ASTM A519 GRADE 4340 COLD DRAWN ALLOY STEEL SEAMLESS PIPES / TUBES
OVERVIEW
Alloy steel seamless steel pipe is kind of long steel. Steel pipe has hollow section, which is widely used as pipeline for conveying fluids, such as oil, natural gas, gas, water and some solid materials. Compared with solid steel such as round steel, steel pipe is lighter in weight under the same bending and torsional strength. It is an economic section steel. It is widely used in manufacturing structural and mechanical parts, such as oil drill pipe, automobile transmission shaft, bicycle frame and steel scaffolding used in construction.
ASTM A519 covers several grades of carbon and alloy steel seamless mechanical tubing. The standard is also acceptable in the manufacture of piping. It is manufactured by hot working and then cold finishing the steel into round, square, rectangle or special shapes.
AISI 4340 Seamless Mechanical Tubing are medium carbon alloy grades, which are widely used for many general purpose applications that require high tensile strength and toughness. The addition of chromium and molybdenum as alloying elements, combined with heat treatment, provides the combined advantage of hardness, ductility, and strength.
Alloy 4340 is a general purpose grade of steel used for industrial and machining applications. The inclusion of Nickel in Alloy 4340 helps simplify heat treatment. In addition, the Nickel in Alloy 4340 increases hardenability of the steel.
An additional grade of Alloy 4340 is Alloy E-4340. E-4340 is critical for parts in aerospace and other industries where great strength is needed. The annealing of Alloy E-4340 characterizes the grade as containing excellent impact and strength properties with good ductility.
