Chemical composition % of the ladle analysis of grade 17-4 H1075 Stainless Steel and Standards

Stainless steel 17-4 H1075 is stainless steel grade 17-4, also known as 630 alloy that has been heat treated at a temperature between 1065° F and 1085° F for 3.75 hours to 4.25 hours. After treating the steel at a temperature of 1075° or higher, it will become softer than in the annealed form. On the Rockwell C scale, 17-4 H1075 stainless steel has a hardness of 31.

17-4PH is a precipitation hardening martensitic stainless steel, which combines high strength and hardness (after heat treatment) wich excellent corrosion resistance, and is suitable for easy fabrication.

Solution Treatments.
As supplied 17-4PH is usuall in the solution treated condition (Condition A). It can be heat treated at different temperatures to offer a wide range of properties. (We also hold stock in H1150+H1150, and annealed block).

Corrosion Resistance
17-4PH stainless steel has excellent corrosion resistance. Corrosion tests and service experience have shown that in all aged conditions it is superior to standard hardenable stainless grades such as 420, 431 and 410. Its corrosion resistance is comparable to grade 304 Stainless.

Welding
Arc and resistance Welding processes used on standard grades of stainless steel are applicable to 17-4PH stainless steel. The low hardness enables sections, up to 100mm, to be welded without requiring pre heating.

Fabrication
17-4PH Condition is suitable for limited cold forming, H1100, H1150 and overaged conditions are more suitable when severe cold forming is required.

Machining
17-4PH Condition has Machining characteristics similar to stainless grades 302, 304 and 410. The high hardness and strength in Condition H900 is the most difficult to machine and the material should be machined at 60% of the rate which is used for Condition A.

Nitriding
To increase the resistance to surface wear, with a slight decrease in corrosion resistance, 17-4PH stainless steel can be nitrided. An approximate hardness of 64/67HRc can be achieved, with a surface hardness depth of up to 0.15mm when nitrided at 540°
C, while still maintaining a high core strength.

Principal Design Features

One of the most widely used precipitation hardening grades in the business. While soft and ductile in the solution annealed condition, it is capable of high properties with a single precipitation or aging treatment. Characterized by good corrosion resistance, high harness, toughness and strength.


Machinability

Long, gummy chips characterize this alloys machinability. It can be machined in the annealed condition, however condition H1150M will yield best results. Post machining solution treatment of parts will be required prior to final hardening if machining in this condition.


Heat Treatment

CONDITION A--Soak at 1900 F (1038 C) for 30 minutes and cool below 60 F (16 C) for complete martensite transformation. CONDITION H 950- Treat Condition A material at 900 F(482 C) for 1 hour, air cool.. CONDITION H925, H1025, H1075, H1100, H1150- Soak solution treated material for 4 hours at specified temperature, air cool, CONDITION H1150M- Soak solution treated material at 1400 F (760 C) for 2 hours, air cool, then re-heat to 1150 F (620 C) for 4 hours and air cool.


Welding

Successfully welded by common fusion and resistance methods, this alloy should not be joined by oxyacetylene welding. AWS E/ER630 filler metal is recommended if required.


Forging

Soak for 1 hour at 2150 F (1177 C) prior to forging. Do not work below 1850 F (1010 C). Post-work solution treatment is required prior to final hardening.
